They make a list of what the “perfect girlfriend” would be like, and now they plan to find her. It shouldn’t be too hard, since Josh is one of the hottest, most popular guys in school. Right?

Bess Navarre would rather read a book than go outside. She’s chubby, dorky, and a self-proclaimed loser. But when her grandmother volunteers her to work at a jewelry kiosk on the beach, Bess has to comply, no matter how humiliating it is. Bikinis and Bess do not go together, and now she feels even dorkier than ever.

When Bess and Josh’s paths collide, sparks fly. But it won’t be that easy. Bryce wants Josh to date a supermodel. And although Bess might just fit all of the things on Josh’s list, she won’t give herself a chance to figure it out.

Stroked (Stroked, #1)

Review: Stroked - Book #1 Stroked Series -Meghan Quinn - July 2016

If there is one author in the world that will always make me laugh, no matter what book they have written it is Meghan Quinn. To me she is my #1 favourite LOL author. Her books are quirky and just plain funny, so much that I am bound to annoy my partner as I sit there and read the funny lines to him while he is trying to play his Xbox One. With the Olympics just finished , there was a massive surge in Olympic and Sports related novels and yes, I know I am behind the times since the Olympics have just finished and this book has been out just over a month but I got there and I have to say like her previous work I have read , Stroked was another favourite and I loved it. From her different characters and personalities to the quirky one-liners and even the romance thread - Meghan Quinn to me is the perfect all-rounder, her books just hit all the right spots of a great read. In Stroked we meet Mauve - sorry mean Paisley who is on her last chance to redeem herself after a stuff-up in her previous job and is the new assistant to Bellini - who is a stuck-up spoilt brat , I imagined her a cross between Emma Roberts in Scream Queens , Snooki from Jersey Shore and Chelsea Kane in Bratz and you have Bellini.  During the book Bellini is in a publicity relationship with swimmer Reese King and we see sparks flying between Paisley and Reese. Can these two keep their blooming relationship out of the spotlight or will Bellini catch on and Paisley's career goes down the drain- once and for all and she can kiss her TV/Film background goodbye ? If you are in the mood for a humourous romantic comedy read and just want to sit back and have a great chuckle and read a hint of romance then you , my dear reader need Stroked in your life.  This is one book that everyone should read for 2016.

VBT# Fairly Certain - Deborah Ann Davis

Do you have favourite themes or tropes that you like to read about in books ? These favourites of yours can guide you to lots of amazing titles by authors you never knew. Fairly Certain by Deborah Ann Davis contained two of my favourite things to read about - the first was that the main character Petir was a computer geek , as I consider myself a somewhat geek . I have a fascination with reading what I deem as  Geek Chic Lit which feature characters that are quirky, nerdy or display geekish characteristics and Petir in Fairly Certain is a computer geek who loves gaming. The second thing I love is when characters find themselves going back in time or in this case and this part is more enjoyable when they find themselves in the middle of a story or certain era and with Fairly Certain it is the time of Robin Hood and his Merry Men including the lovely Maid Rianne with her bow and arrow.
At Maid Rianne’s instruction, he is brought back to their camp. Maid Rainne is part of a band of outlaws fighting against Prince John for King Richard. To complicate matters, she is betrothed to Lord Robert Gisborne who works with the Sherif of Nottingham. As Petir and Maid Rianne’s feeling for each other grow, she is torn by her feelings for this new comer and her fidelity to a betrothed who may only desire her rather than love her. When she is captured on a trip to compete in an archery contest, Petir set’s out to save her. Of course Petir thinks this is all a dream at first like many of the situations we have read similar to this and then when he realises it - he has two thoughts - will he get home and back to his real life and then the other is - as he falls for Maid Rianne - does he even want to return to reality ?
Reading Deborah Ann Davis's book reminded me of a book I read similar to this title years ago by Mari Mancusi - A Connecticut Fashionista in King Arthur's Court and the PC Cast Goddess Series. If you love those Classic tale mash-ups with today's society , then check out Fairly Certain by Deborah Ann Davis as she has written a fast paced tale of Robin Hood Meets the 21st Century.

Luka

What I think might be a quiet day turns out to be anything but. As soon as the boss enters our small office I can see he’s got something on his mind. The lines etched on his forehead are more prominent than usual and his lips are puckered.

I know better than to ask what’s wrong. He’ll tell me when he’s ready. Then he’ll make me solve whatever difficulties he’s dealing with.

That’s the way it works in this business. As the underboss I’m the one who makes all of the boss’s problems go away.

Nicky likes to keep his legitimate business, the Pizza King, separate from his not-so-legal business dealings, so the office we use for our mob activities is located in a strip mall between a nail salon and a copy shop. Our front is a real estate office, but we never actually have any listings or sell houses. But we do have a broker, who makes a nice salary for sitting out front and handling any walk-ins or phone calls.

Nicky takes a gulp of his black coffee before he turns his attention to me.

“There’s something I’d like for you to do.” He points a finger at me. “You’re the only person I can really trust.”

Good morning to you too. “Anything. You know you just have to ask.”

A few months ago someone tried to whack Nicky. Luckily the shooter botched the hit. We all thought the Philly-South Jersey crew was responsible, but we haven’t found any proof yet.

Maybe Nicky discovered something and he’s ready for retaliation.

“I’d like you to escort my wife to her college reunion.”

That’s completely out of left field. “What?”

“Her reunion,” he repeats a little louder, as if hearing him was the problem.

The problem is the request is ridiculous. As fond as I may be of Mia, babysitting his wife isn’t in my job description.

“Why can’t you accompany her?” I realize my question may come across as insubordination, which is definitely frowned upon in our line of work, but his request goes above and beyond my job requirements.

Break a guy’s legs; that’s something I can do in my sleep. Take his wife to some dance; I don’t think so.

“I don’t remember this being a democracy. I give the orders and you carry them out. That’s the way this thing of ours works.”

I blow out air hoping to make his request somehow magically disappear. No such luck. He’s looking at me with anticipation.

“When is her reunion?”

“Labor Day weekend.” He gives me a sly grin.

He’s been talking our ears off about going to Tampa for the holiday weekend to spend time with his new comare. Apparently she’s a hot young nurse and he’s crazy about her.

Even though it’s common for guys like us to have mistresses it’s not something I approve of. I’ve never been a believer in multitasking, especially with affairs of the heart.

I believe a man should cherish the woman he has at home, especially if she’s the mother of his children.

On this point I differ from nearly all of my friends. Most of the guys in our crew want to have their cannoli and eat them too.

“It’s the whole weekend?” I ask.

He nods. “Bookman is a small town. The hotel was sold out, but I was able to talk the owners into renting Mia one of their suites. It has a separate bedroom and you get the sleeper couch in the living room.”

I remember driving through Bookman once on my way to Old Town. I blinked twice and missed the place.

“Why do you need for me to go with her?”

“Because I said so. Isn’t that reason enough?”

“Of course, but is there anything specific I should be doing while I’m there?”

He nods. “You need to make sure no one touches Mia. Capisce?”

“Do you really think that’s going to be a problem?” Not that I don’t think his wife is an attractive woman, but she seems to be devoted to Nicky.

The two of them were high school sweethearts. They’ve been together for years.

“I attended one of my high school reunions.” He holds up his index finger for emphasis. “I know what goes on. A lot of reconnecting with old flames. I don’t want any of those guys even thinking about reconnecting with Mia.”

“Got it, boss.”

“If anyone lays a hand on my wife, make sure he loses his hand. If anyone puts any other body parts where they don’t belong make sure he loses those too.”

He makes a point of staring at my crotch, as if I’d engage in any type of indiscretion with his wife. I value my job, and my body parts, too much.

“Anything else?”

“Have fun dancing to Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch.”

“You know I saw your eyes on me all night. You look at me like you own me, like you want to possess me, and it makes me flush.” She bit down on her lip. “So, I’m wet talking to a man I want nothing to do with.” She drew in a steadying breath. “That’s what you do to me.”

I instantly went hard. Knowing I made her feel those things was so arousing. “I know what I want,” I growled right into her ear.

“What?” She leaned forward to whisper, looking around to make sure the Emperor’s son wasn’t in earshot. I knew she couldn’t tell what I was talking about.

“The bet, I know what I want.” My chest expanded, and I wanted to mark her in the most primal way.

“Well, tell me.” She scooted closer to me looking right into my eyes.

The world around us vanished as we shared the moment. I pressed my lips right to her ear so only she would hear. “I want your panties.”

When not staying up all night writing, J.R. Gray can be found at the gym where it's half assumed he is a permanent resident to fulfill his self-inflicted masochism. A dominant and a pilot, Gray finds it hard to be in the passenger seat of any car. He frequently interrupts real life, including normal sleep patterns and conversations, to jot down notes or plot bunnies. Commas are the bane of his existence even though it's been fully acknowledged they are necessary, they continue to baffle and bewilder. If Gray wasn't writing…well, that's not possible. The buildup of untold stories would haunt Gray into an early grave, insanity or both. The idea of haunting has always appealed to him. J.R. Gray is genderqueer and prefers he/him pronouns.

Exclusive Excerpt: “Let me have her.” I held my hands in the direction of Colin, who’d been pacing with Charlotte in his arms. She was the only happy person in the room and had entertained herself for the past ten minutes by chewing on her fist. He deposited her into my arms and resumed pacing. She grabbed at my chunky silver necklace and lunged for my curls. I knew she wanted to play peek-a-boo in my hair because lately that was her favorite entertainment. “No, babykins. Let’s leave Mommy’s hair alone for tonight.” I swept my curls back with my free hand, and she giggled into my chest. My hair had grown even longer in Caleb’s absence, since I hadn’t had the desire to do anything with it. But my hair didn’t matter, Charlotte’s slobbery little mouth didn’t matter, nothing mattered. We were about to be a family—for the first time. A surge went through me. I was giddy. Manic, even, at the thought of Caleb’s return. I blew a fart noise on Charlotte’s cheek and she laughed more. Bouncing Charlotte on my hip, we turned again to the window, and she reached her chubby hand to the glass, as if trying to touch the night. I’d dressed her in a frothy, hot pink dress with a tulle skirt. She looked unbearably adorable, and it would be impossible for Caleb not to recognize his own child with big blue eyes so identical to his. Colin’s phone buzzed. “It’s him.” He inhaled sharply, then answered and grinned. “Hey. Yeah, we’re all here. Okay.” He hung up. “Caleb and Dad and Mom are in the lobby.” Laura gave a little muffled cry and hugged Sarah, who stared hard at me over Laura’s shoulder. “I’m fine,” I mouthed to her, not feeling fine at all. I kissed Charlotte’s cheek. “Daddy’s home,” I whispered, trying not to shake too much. Charlotte seemed unusually heavy. After a few seconds, a nervous, barking laugh escaped my lips. “How long does it take for the elevator to crawl up here?” No one responded. Then, the ding of the elevator bell. The sliding open of the doors. And my husband walked in.

“They can treat Amy,” I announced, staring blindly out the window. “It’s experimental stuff, but the doctors are going to do everything they can. It’s not too late.”

Mom breathed a sigh of relief, and I seemed to feel it more than see or hear it.

“Insurance won’t cover it, but I told Dr. Abrams that it wouldn’t be a problem.” I looked back over my shoulder at Mom, confused by the fearful look on her face. Her cropped black hair looked frazzled and worn, while her blue eyes, Amy’s eyes, shifted with terror and panic. “What? What is it?”

“Claire,” she cried, grabbing ahold of my wrist until I sat down in the chair beside her. “We can’t afford that. We don’t have the money.” The tears started up again, and I wanted to slap her for lying to me.

“What are you talking about?” I jerked at her shirtsleeve. “What do you mean we don’t have the money? Daddy left you a fortune!”

“Your father only left me with enough to live on until you girls came of age. That and the house.”

“Came of age?” I crossed my arms over my chest, while she dabbed her eyes with his handkerchief.

“The rest of your father’s wealth is in a trust fund that he set up especially for you girls. He wanted to take care of the two of you, maybe because he knew that I couldn’t.”

Wouldn’t was more like it.

“And why wasn’t I told about this? This mysterious trust fund?”

“Because you can’t access it until you turn twenty-one,” she clarified.

“My birthday’s next week,” I noted, stating aloud what we both already knew.

It was my twenty-first birthday to be exact.

“I know.” Her tears dried immediately, as she reached into her handbag to grab her phone. “I’ll call your father’s attorney. He drew up the contract. I think there were some other stipulations.”

“What do you mean?” My frustration resurfaced, while I watched her dial numbers on the LED touch screen. “What kind of stipulations?”

“In order to access all of the money in the trust…”

“Yeah,” I answered, nudging her on. “I have to be twenty-one. What else?”

“I think you have to be married, too.”

Married? How could that even be legal?

I sat down on the floor and held my head in my hands. Everything had happened too soon, making my world spin out of control. I penned a mental list in my head that summed up the main points of the day.

Amy was sick. And her condition, if not treated, was most likely fatal.

Insurance would not cover the experimental treatments, and Mom didn’t have the money to pay.

Instead, my late father’s wealth had been stowed away in a trust, which I would soon have access to.

As long as I married. As long as I had a husband. And all the while, Amy’s heart could be failing.

Money was the only way to save my sister, and at present, marriage was the only way to get the money.

I needed a husband by next week.

And I didn’t even have a boyfriend.
