Review: Little Things - Madison Street

Review: Little Things - Book #1 Second Chances - Madison Street - June 2014

Are you a fan of the gritty New Adult stories ? The ones that feature family abuse ? Ones that despite the hardness , have a little light shining at the end of the tunnel and a story that will prove that often it's the Little Things in life that count and not the big gestures or dramatics that others view as important.
In Little Things by Madison Street , we meet Raya who is seventeen and has just moved into the neighbourhood with her mum and stepdad Craig. Now Craig as we learn in the book is a bully and one of those nice guys outside the house but in the house , that's a whole different ballgame. Raya can't wait till she's eighteen and has been saving up , so that her mum and her can disappear for good and escape the daily torment.
Duke is the guy everyone wants and the thing is he is already taken by Melanie who is the girl everyone wants, the thing is though that Melanie isn't the mean girl popular type that we are all used too , deep down she is actually a genuine nice girl which made me feel sorry for Melanie's character and what happens in the novel as she was sweet and a good person.  Over the novel, we will read as Duke's and Raya's feelings are conflicted as they are meant to be together but have lots of obstacles standing in their way - a bit like Zoe Hart and George Tucker on Hart of Dixie.
Tragedy will strike though before Raya can escape and she will find herself thrown into a world of slavery and trafficking as her evil stepfather has decided to up the ante. Duke still loving her will not give up though until he finds her and as the weeks, months and years pass we still admire Duke's tenacity that he will not give up until she is found as her knows something just isn't right.
This was a gritty yet powerful novel of love and second chances in life and readers it does touch on some issues - so if you aren't comfortable reading about abuse etc then this is not the book for you.
After reading this book , I am now looking forward to reading the next installment from Madison Street.
