North of Beautiful

Review: North of Beautiful - Justina Chen Headley - Feb 2010

Imagine being the most beautiful person in the world and good at everything but having a mark on your face that is the only thing people see. For Terra , which by the way I love her name . She has on her cheek - a port-wine birthmark, which they have tried everything to get rid of it - numerous counts of laser surgery, you name it -they have tried it. If life wasn't that bad with the teasing about the mark and all the stares , her father is an emotional and verbal abuser and is forever putting down Terra and her mother. On their way home from a new surgery technique , Terra and her mum hit ice and end up crashing the car . It is this point that the novel starts to head for a turn as they meet the occupants of the other car - a mother named Norah and her two sons Jacob and Trevor. Norah and Terra's mum Lois hit it off and suprisingly enough so does Terra and Jacob- who at this stage is dressed like a Goth. Following the next pages to the end of the story we see a change in Terra as she becomes closer to Jacob and drifts away from her school friends and we see Lois start to etch out of the shell , that Terra's dad has placed her in.
A really amazing and touching story and if you are one for Charts and Maps and Geography/ Geology and Art , then you definitely will enjoy North of Beautiful.
