God Is in the Pancakes

Review: God is in the Pancakes - Robin Epstein - May 2010

For fifteen-year old Grace , she never expected that getting a job could change her life entirely , too young to be a waitress , not interested in retail , Grace applies to be a candy striper not stripper in an retirement home. It is here she meets Frank Sanders , an 83yr old man with Lou Gehrigs aka ALS disease. Grace and Frank are perfect for each other as they teach each other new tricks. So when Frank's disease gets worse , he asks Grace for a huge favour - to help him die. Frank gives Grace the pills and tells her to crush them into food , so starts off the theme of God is in the Pancakes. We read as we watch Grace reconnect with God, someone who she hasn't spent much time around since her dad left them as she asks him for help, praying for her to do the right thing. As the novel gets on, we also see Grace struggle at school with relationships as her friend Eric has become the school hottie - as he is one of the only two sophomores to reach the Varsity Basketball team - which gives him a Jock status. At the end of the novel, we see Frank pass away but more surprises pop up as we meet Frank's wife Isabelle . Was it Grace who killed Frank or was it Isabelle ? Find out in God is in the Pancakes - another reason the title worked is "God himself is omnipresent - he is everywhere".
God is in the Pancakes is a novel about Moral judgement , ethics and putting your trust in God to make the right decision.
